BRIEF HISTORY OF PATNA
Patna,the present capital of state of Bihar,has a glorious history of ancient past. It is credited to have the capital of the greatv Indian empires like Nandas,Mauryas, Sungas and Gupta. Few cities of India can claim such a chequered and continuous history of nearly 2500 years like that of Patna. Patna is famous internationally for its delicious Digha Dudhias Mangoes.
THE ANCIENT NAMES AND HISTORY OF PATNA
It is under the Mauryans that the name Patliputra of the city had come to
be more commonly used. Meghasthenes mentions it with the Greek name of Patliputra
and gives a very elaborate description of the various parts of the city,its fortifications,
and its complicated municipal 0rganisation.
The Explorations and Excavations at Patna
Buchanan wasd the first to carry out a regular survey of Patna for its ancient
ruins. He was in fact aware that Patliputra was the ancient nam of Patna.
When was this new township or Pattana or Patna born ?
We know from the Maner inscription of 1126 A.D. tha Gahadvala
King Govindachandra of Kanauj ,granted a village NAMED Padali in Maniari-Pattala-Maner is hardly 20 miles (31 kms) from oldPatna City area to a Brahmin named Gunesvarasvamin alongwith another village named Gunave, a name which obviously links itself with the name of Brahmin.Padali,it may be presumed safely, is the same as th ancient village Patali from which the name Patliputra was derived.
